Lyrics
On Jimmy’s birthday, Daddy brought a box of special toys
Some tanks, some soldiers, and a gun meant for little boys
He’d say he’d go into his room, his private battleground
He’d line his little army up and set the tanks around
And then he’d go across the room for soldiers he had more
There has to be an enemy before there is a war
All toys in place, the scene was set with Jimmy in command
He gave the orders, led his men, and took his gun in hand
And this was just a game he played, he’d shoot the soldiers down
He’d drive the tanks into the field and laugh when he had won
But now he’s got an uncle, they call him Uncle Sam
He’s giving Jim some brand new toys since he’s become a man
Some tanks, some soldiers, and a gun
He plays the game once more
This time there isn’t any fun
The game is now real war
The tanks are big, the noise is loud, the gun within his hand
Is not a toy, not empty now, a life it will demand
And Jim must lead his soldiers on, no longer toys of play
They’ll follow him with rifles drawn and some may die today
It’s all a harsh reality, not like it was before
When Jim was once so very young and played the game of war
How many little boys today are out there having fun
while they are in their rooms at play?
With some tanks, some soldiers, and a gun
With some tanks, some soldiers, and a gun
